Biography
Hello! I'm Dr. Susan Carmichael-Kerry, and I graduated with my D.M.A. in Flute Performance in 2016 from Shenandoah University with one of Britain's premier solo flautists, Jonathan Snowden, presenting a lecture recital entitled "Waterscapes in Two New Zealand Flute Chamber Works: Gareth Farr’s Taheke and Nigel Keay’s Terrestrial Mirror." I also received a M.M. in Flute Performance from Shenandoah University (2012) and a B.A. in Music from Seton Hill College (2008). My previous teachers include Dr. Frances Lapp Averitt (former Shenandoah University faculty and Maryland Symphony Orchestra principal flutist), Joel Behrens, Sandra Seefeld, and Rosalind Stack.
I maintain The Fluting Goat private flute studio from my home in Woodbine, MD, and I am currently accepting private students! I have over 15 years of teaching experience, previously teaching flute lessons at the Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy in Winchester, Virginia; at Shenandoah University as a doctoral teaching assistant (and directed the flute choir); at Musselman High School in West Virginia; and through the Millersville University (PA) Music Preparatory Program. In addition to teaching, I have also presented a musical library program on the book Luna's Magic Flute and currently coordinate the Flute Society of Washington's Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir.
I regularly perform as a freelance musician. I have performed with the Westminster Symphony Orchestra, Columbia Orchestra, Anne Arundel Community College Orchestra, Elegant Airs Flute Quartet, Hempfield Area Community Orchestra, Jeannette Community Band, Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Nonde Flute Trio, Millersville University Community Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band (four years), Shenandoah University Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, Symphony of the Valley, Westmoreland County Community College, and Westmoreland Symphonic Winds. These days, you can find me performing with the Flute Cocktail flute choir and in the summertime with the Lyric Band of Hanover.
While I don't participate in many competitions, I was both a 2012 Bach-Handel soloist and chamber ensemble competition winner at Shenandoah University. In addition, I presented Gordeli's Flute Concerto with the Millersville University Wind Ensemble in 2003. And I also received third place in the 2004-2005 Johnstown Symphony Orchestras Young Artists Competition and participated in the 2005 Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras Community Side-by-Side event.
Interestingly I also hold a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry minor from Millersville University (2003) and have previously worked in the environmental field. My family includes my husband Steve, stepdaughter Caroline, daughter Leanna, son James, dog Zeus, two cats: Troubles and Mickey, and pet Dorking chickens (and hopefully some goats in the near future)! In my spare time, I enjoy crafting, historical reenacting, gardening, and spending time with my friends and family.
